“Does God Really Speak to Me?”

It’s the question many leaders wrestle with. As Andy explained, the answer is rooted in John 10: “My sheep hear my voice.” But it’s not just about believing God speaks; it’s about learning how to recognize His voice.

Andy shared the powerful story of Kevin, a former atheist and business owner, who began hearing a “voice” in his mind during a challenging season. Without realizing it was God, Kevin followed the voice’s instructions—firing a toxic client, changing processes, and even visiting Bethel Church at his wife’s request. Step by step, he experienced breakthrough in his business and personal life, leading to the moment he surrendered his life to Christ.

Three Keys to Hearing God at Work

Andy offered three simple but profound questions to help discern if a thought, idea, or nudge is from God:

Does it Release Life?
God’s words bring hope, clarity, and energy. If something leads to fear, doubt, or condemnation, it’s not from Him.
Does it Carry Peace?
“Let peace be your governor” (Colossians 3:15). Even in challenging decisions, God’s direction will resonate with a sense of inner peace.
Is it Impossible to Ignore?
Sometimes God speaks so clearly that His words linger until you act. Andy recalled how a dream confirmed a seemingly irrational decision, leading to divine provision for his family.

The Word, Wise Counsel, and Obedience

Hearing God doesn’t happen in isolation. Andy emphasized the importance of immersing yourself in scripture:

“The more of the Word of God you have in you, the more of His Word you will hear.” (Larry Randolph)

He also stressed seeking wise counsel—those with godly character and experience—and trusting the Holy Spirit’s guidance even when the path doesn’t make logical sense.

One striking example? Andy’s journey to buy a house he couldn’t afford on paper. By listening to God, seeking counsel, and stepping out in faith, he saw miraculous provision, including an interest-free loan and a dramatic increase in property value.

The Practical Side of Hearing God

Os Hillman pointed out how often God speaks in unexpected ways. “Sometimes we hear Him best when we’re not trying—like in the shower or during a walk.”

Andy added, “God speaks in different ways: through His Word, wise counsel, dreams, visions, and even through the still, small voice within. The key is to pause, listen, and act in faith.”
