Let me take you on a journey of how my family and I learned to break free from self-imposed limitations and step into the promises God had for us. This isn’t just theory; it’s lived experience, and I believe it can help you too.

The Restlessness That Started It All

In 2008, my wife Janine and I were settled in a beautiful part of New Zealand. I had a great job, we were deeply connected to a strong church community, and life was comfortable. Yet, despite all the external signs of success, I felt restless. Something was stirring, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Janine sensed it too—a season of change was coming. But where? And how? With no clear direction, we began to seek God intentionally. The answers didn’t come all at once, but through this journey, we learned a powerful truth: breaking free from limitations begins with listening.

Recognizing the Lines We Set for Ourselves

One pivotal moment came during a trip to Uganda. A close friend asked me a question I hadn’t considered: “Have you asked God if He’s leading you to a different geographic place?” That thought had never crossed our minds. Why would it? We had everything we needed right where we were.

But that question cracked something open. We started to realize we had drawn a line of limitation around our lives—a line that God was calling us to cross.

Hearing God in the Everyday

God’s voice began breaking through in surprising ways. While reading a Bible story to our four-year-old son, the words in Genesis 12—“Get out of your country, from your family, to the land I will show you”—jumped off the page. Two days later, a visiting speaker at our church read Joshua 1: “Now arise… and cross over the river Jordan.” Suddenly, the theme was unmistakable: It’s time to move.

But God wasn’t just speaking to me. Janine also sought clarity and was led to Jeremiah 3:14: “I will take you… to Zion and will set shepherds over you according to My heart.” We knew we were being called to a new location, though the “where” was still unclear.

The Role of Wise Counsel

When making life-altering decisions, wisdom from trusted counsel is invaluable. We reached out to five mature, prophetic leaders and shared what we believed God was saying. Without giving them specifics, we asked them to pray and share what they sensed. Every single one confirmed the timing, the call to move, and even the location: Redding, California.

It was clear this wasn’t just our idea—it was God’s direction.

Taking Bold Steps of Faith

Knowing what God is saying is one thing; acting on it is another. Within six weeks, we resigned from work, packed up our lives, and moved our family of six across the globe with only 10 suitcases. It was terrifying. It was also one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

The process wasn’t without challenges—navigating immigration, finding schools for our kids, and starting over in a foreign country wasn’t easy. But through it all, God’s faithfulness sustained us.

What We Learned About Breaking Limitations

Looking back, it’s easy to see how God was speaking and leading. At the time, it required faith, courage, and a willingness to let go of comfort. Here are some lessons we learned that might help you:

  1. Recognize Your Limitations: Often, we don’t realize the boundaries we’ve placed on our lives until God challenges them. What’s your “line of limitation”?

  2. Listen Intentionally: God speaks in many ways—through scripture, wise counsel, and even unexpected moments. Are you paying attention?

  3. Seek Wise Counsel: Don’t make big decisions in isolation. Involve trusted mentors who can pray and offer confirmation.

  4. Take Action: Faith without action is just a good intention. What is God asking you to do? What’s your next step?

What About You?

What limitations have you unknowingly placed on your life? Is there a boundary God is calling you to cross? Take a moment to pause and ask Him:

“Lord, are there lines of limitation I’ve set for myself? What is the future You have planned for me? How can I step into the land of risk and promise You’re inviting me into?”
