Lessons from the Road: Taupo, New Zealand

We’re three weeks into our working sabbatical—an intentional time of listening to God, engaging in business, and making space for rest and revelation. This week, we’re in Taupo, New Zealand, surrounded by breathtaking nature, family, and a growing awareness of how God is moving in this region.

Here’s what we’re doing, what we’re observing, and what we’re learning—and how you can apply these lessons in your own life and business.
Following God’s Lead: What We’re Doing
Our time in New Zealand has been a mix of business, connection, and personal reflection. Here’s what’s been happening:
Hosting a Heaven in Business Workshop – We tested running a one-day workshop in Taupo, gathering 42 business leaders from across the country. The hunger for community and faith-centered business training was unmistakable.
Reconnecting with Family – Spending time with my brother, sister-in-law, niece (who’s in med school), and parents has been a gift.
Exploring Creation – Hiking through native bush, running by the lake, and slowing down enough to hear God speak through nature.
Observing the Spiritual Climate – God is shifting the atmosphere in New Zealand, opening doors for faith-based conversations like never before.
What We’re Observing: Signs of Change
People Are Hungry for Connection
The most powerful takeaway from our Heaven in Business workshop wasn’t just the content—it was the connection. People didn’t want to leave. They were craving like-minded community, a place to talk about faith, family, and business in an integrated way.
Generosity is Emerging in New Zealand
A young business leader approached me after the event and asked, “How do I invest in your niece?” This wasn’t just about business; it was about seeing someone’s potential and wanting to bless them. Historically, New Zealand has struggled with a poverty mindset—but we’re seeing a shift.
God is Opening Doors for Faith Conversations
In the past, sharing faith in New Zealand was met with resistance—even hostility. But this time, I approached a young man with a knee injury and asked if I could pray for him. Instead of rejection, he welcomed the prayer and thanked me for the blessing. Something is changing.
God Speaks Through Nature
As we walked through the bush, I felt God say, “You don’t have to study to get a fresh revelation—just walk with Me.” It was a reminder that sometimes, we overcomplicate hearing God. He speaks in the stillness, in the beauty of creation, and in the ordinary moments of life.
What We’re Learning: Takeaways for Business and Life
- Hold Your Peace, Gain More
A friend of ours lost a five-acre orchard in a cyclone. Instead of panicking, he stayed in God’s peace. Eighteen months later, he now manages a 20-acre orchard—gaining more than he lost. When we stay anchored in God’s presence, loss can turn into multiplication.
Application: When faced with business setbacks, resist the urge to react in fear. Stay in peace, and watch for creative solutions.
- Carry People in Your Heart
Reading Exodus 28, I was struck by how the high priest carried the names of Israel’s tribes—both on his shoulders and over his heart. It’s a picture of leadership: We carry those entrusted to us into God’s presence.
Application: Make a list of the people you lead (employees, family, clients). Pray for them daily, holding them in your heart as you work and make decisions.
- Build Environments of Connection
The workshop confirmed something we already knew: Business leaders feel isolated. They need spaces where they can connect, learn, and support one another.
Application: If you’re leading a business or group, prioritize connection. Facilitate mastermind groups, networking events, or simply intentional conversations that foster real relationships.
- Dress Like a King, Walk Like a Priest
Exodus 28 also describes the intricate clothing of the priest—because how we present ourselves matters. While it’s not about fashion, it is about carrying ourselves with confidence and excellence.
Application: Evaluate how you show up in your business. Your words, demeanor, and even how you present yourself send a message—make sure it aligns with the Kingdom.
Next Steps: How to Apply This in Your Life & Business
Ask God: Who Have You Called Me to Carry? Write down the names of those in your sphere of influence and start praying for them daily.
Stay in Peace, Even in Uncertainty. When challenges arise, refuse to panic. Instead, ask God, “What are You doing in this situation?”
Create Spaces for Connection. Whether it’s a business group, a retreat, or simply a meal with like-minded leaders, invest in relationships.
Engage with God in Nature. Take time to slow down and listen. You don’t always need a deep study—sometimes, a walk in the woods is enough.
Represent Well. Whether in speech, behavior, or appearance, remember you are an ambassador of the Kingdom in the marketplace.
As we continue this journey, we’ll keep sharing insights from the road. This week, we’re headed to Queenstown for a retreat with leaders from the U.S., Singapore, and New Zealand. Excited to see what unfolds next!
