I am really good at pleasing people. That’s why I have customers, followers, friends… family. And my circle of influence keeps growing including even MORE people to please. More people, more expectations. The problem is I just can’t please them all, all of the time. How will I SURVIVE?

This time of the year there are even greater expectations and more people to please: End of year parties to attend; the family updates you are supposed to send out; the high value customers you should acknowledge; visiting relatives to take care of; staff, volunteers, children and spouse to get gifts for. And then there’s planning for the next year, end of year accounts… endless expectations and people to please.

I woke this morning feeling rushed and pressured with so many little things I need to take care of before year end. I make my list of things to do then I get interrupted by wonderful people dropping by and giving me season’s greetings!

I feel jumpy, with broken sleep from the windy night that caused the house to make unusual creaking noises.

What is the PROBLEM?

Not working hard enough?

Not exercising enough?

Drinking too much coffee?

Eating too much sugar?

Not managing my time well enough?

Trying to please too many people…

When I stop and think about it, I will NEVER please everyone in my circle of influence.

I must DECIDE daily who I am going to please and be ok with the awkwardness of saying NO to others… of DISAPPOINTING OTHERS… of DENYING their agenda for me.

How do I decide the priority of who I will please?

The one person I have decided to please above all else is my Creator God. He made me and knows how I work best. He is My Source of strength, hope, courage, peace and increase. I will give an account to Him for what I do with my life. And He is my friend, my closest friend.

When I make Him my priority to please, all other priorities fall into place. When I ask His input on how to prioritize my day, it is amazing how much better it flows.

Who are YOU going to please?

Here’s some questions to ask and ponder in order to align, focus your ‘pleaser’ and get the best out of your day:

Will I please God today?

Did I please Him today?

What did He ask of me today?

Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly.

Delight myself in His delight.

Seek His Kingdom first in all things.

What do I need to focus on doing today in order to please Him?

I already have! Selah (pause and think deeply on that…). Just the process of asking these questions and reconnecting with Him already realigns me with pleasing Him. I am delighting myself in Him and He directs my day. I focus on pleasing Him and I get to walk in His pleasure all day!

How will I walk in His pleasure all day today?

How will I know when I leave His pleasure?

I know that when I get jumpy, edgy and lose my peace that I have stepped out of His pleasure. All I need to do is stop and realign/reconnect. Be still and know God.

I cannot please everyone but I can walk close pleasing Him in all I do. It feels much more peaceful. I get more done. I am ok with not getting everything done. I am walking under the smile of God. He makes my way smooth. And I can securely smile at the expectations of others as I say “no” and keep walking with what I have to do today.

So what will you do?
