We all have situations that seem ‘impossible’ and, no matter which way we look at them, we just can’t see a solution.

As I was processing the old familiar feelings of frustration at the seeming immovability of a particular scenario in my life, I decided to plead my case before God. And these are the solution steps He gave me…

1. Lay the situation out as you understand it

Put everything you’re thinking, feeling and experiencing before God. Talk through the whole scenario with Him. Lay it all out. What you see as the obstacles as well as the opportunities and dreams you’re holding in your heart.

Ask Him to help you understand the difference between the things that are real blockages and those that are a result of an incorrect belief you have about either yourself, others or Him.

2. Ask for His help

God is absolutely on your side. He is for you and wants to champion the righteous Desires of your heart. He offers His help in so many places throughout the Word, so ask!

“Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn’t a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing. You’re at least decent to your own children. So don’t you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?

Mathew 7:7-11 (Msg)

Do your due diligence. Check your facts. Is what you believe really so? Is there another way to achieve what you’re trying to do? Do you have all the correct information? Have you checked all sources of help and exhausted all avenues of assistance?

3. Be full of expectant hope

In Proverbs 3:5-6 God says:

Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. [a] In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].
Proverbs 3:5-6 (Amp)

God knew that we’d tend to put great stock in what we know and can see and experience before our eyes. So, in His kindness and mercy, He reminds us not to rely on our very limited understanding of both the situation and the ways we think it can be solved.

If He knew this would be our tendency then the very fact that He addresses it and gives us its solution, should fill us with hope at the Truth that He has more to show us than we could ever figure out on our own.

Our part is to simply acknowledge and recognize Him and He’ll be the One to make our paths straight and smooth and remove the obstacles that block our way. This then fills us with HOPE because there is more insight into this situation that is available – and its solution is not solely up to us to figure out!

4. Be watchful

Hope, expects.

Posture your heart and mind to be on the look-out for the wisdom that God will bring. If you’ve ordered an item and you’re excited about its arrival, then you’re going to be checking the mailbox, looking up the tracking information and twitching the curtains every time you hear anything that sounds like a delivery vehicle.

Ask Holy Spirit to help you to be aware of songs you hear, articles that come to your attention, conversations that steer in new directions. Watch out for ideas that you think of or dreams that you dream that you haven’t experienced before. Be receptive to hearing from people or sources that you may have previously discounted. You have asked for your loving Dad’s help – expect Him to answer.

5. Record His goodness

I can almost guarantee that the way He leads you will be different to the way you thought you’d go.

When we surrender our idea of what a solution looks like, then God is free to be His amazing self and show us Truths and ways forward that we would never have thought of ourselves. He will overwhelm us with His goodness and His majesty and we will once again be in awe of the Creator of Heaven and Earth who also delights in being the Dad who helps us.

I encourage you to keep a record of what He does with, and in, you as you go on this journey with Him. Not only will this account sustain you the next time you come up against an obstacle, but it will also be a memory wall that you get to share with others as they look at your life and see the fingerprints of love, guidance and care that mark your walk with God.

I’m excited to hear of your adventures. Please share them in the comments below.

  • Where have you been consistently ‘stuck’ that you can now talk through with God?
  • How has He helped you move through a difficult situation in the past?
  • Where has He done the seemingly impossible in your life before?
