Quantcast

Suddenly our revenue got cut by $40,000. And my forecast for the next twelve months got thrown completely out of whack. When will I be able to have in-person events again? Will there be another outbreak in the fall? How do I budget and plan when I have no idea what to believe?

And what about my lease space? It’s primary purpose is to host in-person events and serve as our office. We just put thousands of dollars into renovating it. And we haven’t set foot in it in a couple months… and unlikely to for the next few months? Will I even need a building? Could I pay for it?

What do I do now?

Perhaps you are walking through the same or similar questions. How do I know what to do?

One thing is certain; if we want to exist as a business in twelve months time we need to make some changes RIGHT NOW.

So what do I do? What will the business landscape even be like?

All these wonderful thoughts woke me up way too early.

I turned to my default action – listen to bible quietly using my ear pods as my wife slept beside me.

The book of John and all the miracles of Jesus sound like a good ‘fix.’

Nope. Didn’t work. Still got anxiety about tomorrow.

So I turn to default action #2 – Bethel Music’s new album, Peace.

Nope. Not working this morning. I need to DO something.

So I read my emails quietly on my phone.

Now I’m REALLY jacked up… Bad choice Andy!

So I got up, ironed a shirt and pondered (prayed) what do I do?

Ding! My mental buzzer went off. “I need wisdom to know what to do!”

“And where do you find wisdom?”

“Proverbs, the BOOK of wisdom!!!”

Now, why didn’t I think of that earlier?

I turned to Proverbs 4 and began to listen as I ironed my shirt. A bunch of phrases stood out.

Don’t forget my words…

Don’t turn your back on wisdom…

Look straight ahead,

and fix your eyes on what lies before you.

Mark out a straight path for your feet;

stay on the safe path.

Don’t get sidetracked;

keep your feet from following evil.

Proverbs 4:5, 25-27

What did it mean?

This all translated to me a phrase I’ve heard God say to me before:

“Don’t change the subject.”

But that doesn’t make sense… we cannot deliver what we were delivering because of COVID19 and follow-on affects. How on earth do I not change the subject???

I clarified for myself what the ‘subject’ was. This is the message we are ‘selling.’ We package that in executive retreats, conferences, workshops, courses… ALL off-limits at this time.

But how?

How do we keep the subject but not do what we were doing….???

I jumped on a call with my wise friend, Ray Edwards and ended up processing more.

Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.

Proverbs 15:22

As we processed this together I heard another “DING!” as my mental buzzer resounded.

“Don’t change the subject….. change the DELIVERY!”

BOOM. Now the sides of my tunnel vision got blown apart and I could start thinking of possibilities…

What if we could take our in-person events and make them virtual?

What if this actually MULTIPLIES our ability to serve people?

What if this actually MULTIPLIES our budget?!

Now to Action

I brainstormed some more with Ray then got to scribbling down some ideas in my journal.

What were the core ingredients of what we were delivering?

How could deliver these in an online experience?

Who knows more about this than me?

I took the concept to my team who brainstormed it further.

THIS LOOKS POSSIBLE!

We threw the concepts together and put a basic outline, date and registration online.

Would this work? Would anyone sign up.

“Don’t change the subject; change the delivery.”

Later:

A couple of weeks later and one week before deadline we have sold 22 of 25 registrations and there is a BUZZ about this new offering. We have confirmed some key speakers BUT majority of signups happened BEFORE any of this was confirmed.

AND it looks like we can easily do this once a month. It is entirely possible we in the process of multiplication.

How do we pivot?

  1. Ask WISDOM, His Name is Jesus and He kind of knows everything…
  2. Listen, turn aside and take time to actually hear…
  3. Process with wise counsel…
  4. Take action…
  5. Repeat

How will you pivot?
