I’ve been reflecting on my life, some of the things that we get to do, the people that I get to meet, the places I’m getting to go, the growth in my family, the growth in my faith, etc.
What decisions are you facing that, 10 years from now, changes everything?
Back in 2008 I was growing in work & family that including my wife, Janine, kids aged two, four, six and eight. At that time I had just been promoted work. I was employed at a large New Zealand Agricultural Bank, and was starting my role of New Business Manager. Although this was the job I wanted, there was something on the inside that was just not satisfied.
On paper, everything was great.
It was around this time that we felt that this feeling was more than a job change, or ministry change, but we actually felt as though is would be a geographic change.
I remember writing the question down in my journal and thinking,
“God, You know our future.”
The very next day I was reading a Bible Story to my son Ben (four years old). Typically he would ask to hear stories like David and Goliath, or Samson or some violent action adventure story. However, this particular day he chose the story of Abraham.
We read the verse,
“Abraham, leave your family and country and go to a new land that I will show you.”
I remember feeling like something hit me in the chest. I knew those words were an answer to the question that I wrote in my journal the day before.
The following Sunday Church Service we had a visiting speaker and he spoke on the very same passage. At the time I was not paying much attention as I was debriefing with the Worship Team. The moment he opened up this passage that changed and he had my full attention.
“It’s time to cross your Jordan.”
The Jordan was the line that the Israelites had not crossed for 40 years.
I knew the confirmation I had experienced. What I needed was for Janine to experience the same. That day she had asked,
“God, give me a scripture, show me what You are speaking.”
From there she heard to look up the verse Jeremiah 3:14-15
“I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.”
Janine and I clearly heard God say,
“Leave everything and go to a new country that I’ll show you.”
The next questions, “where & when?”
After praying on multiple ideas of places we might move, Janine says,
“What about that guy Bill Johnson?”
We’d been to a couple of conferences in New Zealand at which he spoke. What resonated wasn’t the content of what he said, but the spirit he carried that sparked something in me that wasn’t there before.
Our decision was made, we were accepted on student visas and the rest is history.
The lesson? Go for it.
I’m sitting here 11 years later in a house in Redding, California. I’m amazed at how much my faith has grown. I’m amazed at how my marriage has grown. I’m amazed at how my children have grown up in this environment so well.
There are decisions left to be made that will define the rest of your life.
God is faithful to lead and guide you and go with you on the journey.
