Have you ever found yourself waiting and looking for a promise from God to be fulfilled and it doesn’t seem like anything is changing?
Have you known that you are called to something amazing but it doesn’t seem like the doors are opening?
1 Samuel 16:1, 13
Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons. (vs13)Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward
1 Samuel 16:17-19
So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep
A few months ago I was meeting with a friend who gave me a prophetic word of what God was releasing me into. It was a very powerful and encouraging word. It was like something lit up inside of me and I knew God was on it. Part of the word was the time was now! As I began praying over this word from the Lord, I felt the Holy Spirit confirm the word and say, “Get Ready, the time is now!” Over the next few weeks a number of others came up to me confirming that God was launching me, opening up doors and now is the time. As you can imagine, I was very excited and began looking for this open door. I began putting my focus and attention and praying into these words but nothing seemed to be happening.
I was frustrated, discouraged and confused. I didn’t know why anything wasn’t opening up and why I wasn’t seeing the breakthrough that God said was coming. One day when I was expressing my frustration and confusion to God I heard him say, “you stopped watching the sheep.” It was as though a light bulb got turned on. I was anointed as King, like David, I received the promise from God of what I was called to, but I stopped doing what was in front of me – well. I took my focus off of what God had last spoken to me and put in my hand, and was striving after fulfilling or looking for the promise from God.
If you look in this passage of Scripture you will see in the first verse David was anointed king, picked out among all his other brothers and set apart as the King of Israel. However it wasn’t yet the time. Four verses late King Saul is tormented by a spirit and hears about David and sends for him. They found him “still watching the sheep.”
I was reminded of what God had put in my hands before the Word and how I had stopped building the wall that was in front of me. When I refocused, within days, things began to change.
Today maybe you find yourself in a place of waiting to step into the promises or calling over your life.
Here are some keys that have helped me on this journey.
1. What was the last thing God spoke or put in your hand to do?
Most of us get caught up on what is next and we forget what the last thing was that God has spoken or given to us. As David did, keep watching the sheep. Keep building the wall in front of you. Be faithful with what He has given you and watch what God will use that for, as a piece of His promise to you.
2. Trust that He will do what He said He will do
I know this seems basic but sometimes it is very hard. It says in Isaiah 55 that His word will not return void but it will accomplish what He set it out to do.
So today, take a minute and let God know that you trust Him with your future and that He is Faithful.
3. Something is Happening in the Nothing
Remember that God is actively working on your behalf. Even when it seems like nothing is happening – the Truth is that something is happening. I am convinced now more than ever that in a moment, God will shift things and the doors will open and you will step into all that He has for you. The Psalmist says, I keep my eyes fixed on Him therefore I will not be moved. God is like a General Contractor. He is working on things and putting things together that you don’t even realize are pieces to the puzzle that will eventually come together.
So today – keep your eyes on Him, do what is in front of you to do and watch what He does in response!
